One2One Mentoring:
Description: mentoring relationship between executive and experienced outsider
Observations:
- Typical approach for first time companies and mentors
- Most common form of business mentoring
- Often used by EC matched companies and mentors that are repatriates (coupled with e-mentoring, depending on location of the parties)
Company considerations:
- Identify person and type of mentor that supports their development/needs
- Evaluate mentors based on style and experience
- Establish ground rules and exchange
Mentor considerations:
- Evaluate individual from company based on their needs and style and mentor ability to support them
- Establish ground rules and exchange
E-mentoring:
Description: mentoring relationship between executive and experienced outsider that is typically done via email/phone do to proximity of parties
Observations:
- Typical approach for experienced company mentee and mentors
- Often tailored to global business mentoring or where one of the parties is a frequent traveller
- The mentoring style is different for both parties as most people are trained to communicate face to face
- The approach most commonly used by EC matched companies and mentors (expatriates)
Company considerations:
- Identify person and type of mentor that supports their development/needs
- Evaluate mentors based on style and experience
- Confirm that mentee can do good phone/email
- Dedicate the time to utilise the mentor 6-18 months
- Establish ground rules and exchange
Mentor considerations:
- Evaluate individual from company based on their needs and style and mentor ability to support them
